Leap Year – Brides Propose February 29

It’s a leap year this year and brides can propose on February 29…. Mind you, brides can propose whenever they see fit. According to an old Irish tradition, this is the perfect chance for a woman to take matters into her own hands and propose marriage to her groom to be on February 29.

Women may wish to propose on a leap year for many reasons but the obvious one is that they are sick of waiting. In saying this some grooms just don’t have the confidence to ask or just see it as “a piece of paper”. You will generally find that when a women pops the question, the usual response is “ain’t I meant to be the one asking…” Well….why haven’t you!

To prepare for your proposal, consider and ask yourself the following:

  1. Make sure you have confidence

  2. Consider his response

  3. Has there been indicators/discussions regarding your future together

  4. Be considerate of his emotions when he responds as it’s going away from tradition

  5. Prepare for your proposal (where/when/how)

  6. Make sure you know what you are going to say

  7. Revisit confidence levels

  8. Do it!

  9. Party!

Be prepared for the question that most people often ask newly engaged couples, “how did he propose?” Ensure you have discussed with each other how you will respond and make sure you are both confident with your response. Some grooms may still want to take the glory as it’s seen as being nontraditional to society.

It’s great to stray from tradition and I as a modern and fun celebrant can incorporate this into your ceremony to ensure you, your groom and your guests have a memorable day.

So good luck ladies for Monday and I look forward to hearing how you went about proposing to your grooms to be!
